Data Visualization

Data visualization services for policy, research and public data

We design and build interactive data tools that help people find the answer they came for: policymakers comparing states, advocates tracking progress, residents looking up their own neighbourhood.

Our work includes the Urban Institute’s State of the Safety Net tool, the NCOA Benefits Participation Map and four iterations of the HAND Housing Indicator Tool.

What we build

  • Interactive dashboards and explorers for research and policy data
  • Custom interactive maps, from state-level choropleths to city-wide asset maps
  • Data stories that walk readers through a finding step by step
  • Embeddable charts and tools for partner sites

How we work

We start with the questions your audience needs to answer, not with chart types. Then we prototype with your real data early, because the shape of the data changes the design.

We work closely with your researchers so every comparison is accurate and every colour scale and label tells the truth about the data.

Accessible by default

Charts and maps are some of the hardest content to make accessible. We pair visuals with data tables and text summaries, check colour contrast and colour-blind safety, and make interactive controls work with a keyboard.

Technology

  • React and Next.js for the application
  • D3 for custom charts, Leaflet and GeoJSON for maps
  • Static data builds or APIs, depending on how often your data changes

Frequently asked questions

Do you work with our existing data, or do we need to prepare it first?

We work with the data you have. Part of discovery is understanding its structure and gaps, and we can help clean and reshape it for the tool.

Why build a custom tool instead of using Tableau or Power BI?

Off-the-shelf dashboards are a good fit for internal analysis. A custom tool makes sense when the audience is the public, when the tool needs to match your brand and site, or when accessibility and performance matter.

Can the tool be updated when new data comes out?

Yes. We can set up the data pipeline so your team publishes new releases itself, or handle updates for you.

Ready to discuss your next project?

We'll schedule a 30-minute discovery call to understand your goals, assess fit, and outline next steps — no pressure, no pitch deck.
